The Day School Milieu Treatment Program (DSMTP)
What is it? | A daytime program for children who are having significant mental health problems that prevent them from learning and participating in a regular school. |
Area of focus | Children with Special Needs |
Agencies/ Providers | The Etobicoke Children’s Centre |
Description |
The DSMTP program uses a range of strategies to help children develop skills, manage their behavior and address other psycho-social issues. A multi-disciplinary staff team works collaboratively with each child, his/her family and other service providers to develop a service plan and goals for treatment. The plan and goals are based on assessments, observations and interviews and take into consideration key factors such as the child’s problems, needs, strengths and developmental levels as well as the family’s background, lifestyle, stresses, beliefs and sources of support. While the focus of the program is to address mental health concerns, teachers also work with each child on their academics so they continue to develop in this area. Children receive individualized services within a small group setting. DSMTP serves approximately 40 children per academic year. Locations: The DSMTP has three programs located at the ECC main site (see address below) and two classrooms in a community school in York. |
