Area of focus | Supporting children’s reading/ literacy |
Agency/ Provider | Eastview Neighbourhood CC |
Description |
Eastview’s reading program was launched in 2005 by teacher and children’s author, Sheilah Currie. The program’s aim is to support the literacy learning children receive in school by providing a bag of books at each child’s individual reading level (corresponding to the same leveling system used in elementary schools). A team of dedicated volunteers is on hand to assist with any challenging text, and the books are sent home with the children for extra practice throughout the week. Chapter books are also available for older children (Grades 3-8), and picture books may be borrowed for pre-schoolers. If you live in the neighbourhood, feel free to drop by. We’re working together to help your child become a skilled and confident reader. Read Up runs on Tuesday Evenings between 5:30 – 6:30 pm, all year ’round. |
